Part 0: Listening Strategies

Table of Contents

Practicing active and compassionate listening will strengthen your ability to connect and collaborate with diverse groups, fostering understanding and respect.

Town Halls

One way to empower diverse communities to share their perspectives is by hosting regular Town Halls. Invite community members to participate, create a welcoming and inclusive environment, and approach discussions with openness and humility. Be prepared to engage in meaningful dialogue by asking and answering difficult questions, moderating with sensitivity, and fostering transparency to build trust and mutual understanding.

Informal Ice-Breakers

Foster connection and understanding through thoughtful ice-breakers or conversation starters. Use these moments to encourage teammates to share their culture, background, or beliefs in a safe and welcoming environment, promoting mutual respect and deeper connections.

Listen to Understand

Listen with the intent to understand honestly. This means focusing entirely on the speaker without formulating your response while they’re talking. Pause thoughtfully before replying, and take the time to reflect on their message and its deeper meaning, fostering connection and mutual respect.
