Being prepared for the hospital - emergency to inpatient

Visits to the emergency room and admission to the hospital can happen unexpectedly to anyone. For a person living with dementia, going to the hospital can be a very difficult and frightening experience. Older individuals, especially those living with dementia, are at risk for delirium, decreased mobility, increased falls risk, as well as new onset or worsening of continence problems during acute illness and hospitalization. Nurse researchers Kathleen Hunter and Sherry Dahlke from the University of Alberta will discuss strategies for being prepared for an unexpected hospital visit and ways in which family care partners can support and advocate for their loved one in the emergency room, during a hospital stay, and the transition home.
