In this lesson, we’ll look at what dementia is – and just as importantly, what it isn’t. You’ll learn that dementia is not a normal part of aging, and it doesn’t mean a person has lost their worth or abilities.

A senior woman of African descent smiles as she plays cards with friends off camera. She is also sitting at a kitchen table drinking coffee.

We’ll clear up some common myths and look at the changes dementia can cause in thinking, memory, and communication. At the same time, you’ll see that people living with dementia are more than their diagnosis. With support, they can continue to live meaningful lives, stay connected, and contribute to their communities.

By the end of this lesson, you’ll be better able to recognize dementia, challenge misconceptions, and support people with empathy and respect.
