Part 4: Communicating with Care Home Staff

You and the person with dementia will come into contact with many people at the long-term care home.

Communicating appropriate information about the person’s life, former occupation and daily routines can help staff provide the best possible care.  It helps to give a picture of the person before the disease.

Download and print a copy of the activity sheet below.  Take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the tips for communicating effectively with care home staff.

For Reflection…

After you’ve reviewed the activity sheet, take a few minutes to reflect on the following questions.  Feel free to make some notes.

  • Which of these communication tips have you tried?
  • Which of these communication tips are new to you? How confident are you that you will try them?

What other communication tips could you share with care partners based on your own experience?

Preparing for the Future

Asking questions of health care providers can sometimes be difficult. Many of us simply do not know the questions we could ask to help us better understand and plan for the future.

This question prompt sheet has been designed to open up conversations between you, your family, and members of the healthcare staff in this facility. The answers to these questions may not be simple or straightforward; dementia affects each person in different ways.

By asking these important questions, we hope you are able to get the information you need regarding how things might progress toward the final stages of life and help prepare you for the future. Click on the image below to download and print a copy of the question prompt sheet.
