Part 0: Bias Part 1

Table of Contents

Prototype Bias:

  • Prototypes form the root of one of the most powerful biases we hold: the status quo.
  • We observe prototypes in our environment, which shapes our belief of the “ideal” person for a role based on stereotypes.
  • Prototypes do not reflect how things are; rather, they dictate how we think things should be.
  • Recognizing this is crucial because if we adhere strictly to the way things have always been done, we hinder growth in diversity, innovation, and productivity.

Pro-White Man Bias:

  • White men make up 95% of CEOs, leading our brains to perceive this as normal and expected.
  • Pro-White Man Bias is the “general belief that white men are the most competent group of people” because they occupy high positions and continue to do so.
  • This bias arises during the hiring process. When looking for a new CEO, the likelihood of hiring a white male increases due to this bias.
